6:00 pm
you live on one hundred thirty three possible so food i should try it because you know how fabulous i had lunch i got so many i mean. i know that i'm still really messed up. and we're all for it so personally. that's. the worst you're going through. right now to the. radio guy and for a minute. what. did you ever seen anything like this i'm so.
6:01 pm
proud moment i mean martin and this is breaking on the set so today marks the fortieth anniversary of one of the most important and controversial supreme court decisions of the twentieth century roe v wade that's right on january twenty second back in one thousand nine hundred seventy three it was declared that all laws prohibiting abortion violate a woman's constitutional right to privacy and while there are thousands of pro-life activists using the anniversary to campaign for roe v wade to be overturned a pew research poll shows that more than six out of ten americans do not agree they would not want to see a reversal of the decision however you may find this a little bit disconcerting according to another recent pew study most young people have no clue where overweight even is yet a whopping fifty six percent of those polled didn't know that the case had anything to do with abortion so if our young people aren't educated how will they even know what their rights are and if they. i don't know what their rights are how will they
6:02 pm
defend them let's break the set. up. for yourself or she's going to be like. oh. yesterday almost a million people attended president obama's inauguration but the event held even more significance this time around because this year is also the fiftieth anniversary of dr martin luther king's march on washington where he gave his famous i have a dream speech and it's one hundred fiftieth anniversary of a mancipation proclamation the election of an african-american president signaled a massive shift in this nation's social consciousness for president obama's election victory was far from the culmination of dr king's dream so to talk about all that and more our very own men will rob will of breaking the set caught up with reverend jesse jackson human rights activist and a personal friend of dr king earlier today take a look. it was
6:03 pm
a huge. historically been american history where tourists in different forces converge one of us not the kings the fourth birthday and the celebration of it as a national holiday. because of the work he did the work he led in effect he was blooded up he was hated he was. fired he was stabbed and wounded he was shot and killed and they started nine but he tore down the walls and the bricks from those walls laid the groundwork for the bridges of president barack obama run across to become the president. and the walls not come down the kind of the nevada britta run across if he had been as blood and stained is not the cane was you have been rejected as a as a credible nominee so these two forces came together to make for a glorious. season yesterday of. the american extension of power
6:04 pm
it's also within the context. to fifty years after massive patient proclamation half of americans went slave for tuition for the four years some of that we were enslaved longer than we have been freed two hundred forty four years and the king began with the dream i have a dream that one day you will. the promise made and broken for now hundred years so just present the king spoke of the american dream and honoring fulfilling the promise president obama spoke of the great american promise to be full feel so in many ways those speeches numbers guy i think both of them would leave the road that in the proper course and in the pan that's so it was a very progressive speech and very timely brevard so we're fifty years on now from the civil rights movement but there's still a lot that this country is dealing with war poverty a slow recovery and you mentioned yesterday there was an article that you wrote an
6:05 pm
op ed we said that there was a somber undercurrent yesterday i think you were referring to. to the mass shootings i'm wondering what what you what you meant by that and what the rainbow push coalition kind of approach to the some on the current is that while we celebrated those who won the election obama celebrated the victory the forces sought to defeat him have not stopped working to seal on the mayan the dream gone the my and the american promise the teapot there really is the fort sumpter teapot is one hundred fifty years old and either lost a battle between jealous be state's rights is basic and civil rights. anti-woman rights and workers' rights would be a more perfect union with this and even planted on the american people and called the president broad was saying yesterday was that this should be a one ten one big can america all fit on the one big tent and with the u.i. struggling poor child you should have the same dream of a rich the black why the brown with you again straight. to you from
6:06 pm
appalachian alabama you should have to say i'm up to it as he spoke. of evening the playing field that's what made the speech progressive wherever and you see that there's still a lot of a lot of work to be done is this something that we should expect. from president obama from the system we met at occupy wall street back in zuccotti park and i got a sense that what people were really concerned about was the establishment and the change isn't coming from the establishment is that where we should expect progress to come from or should we wait for another social movement for another doctor and move and change really comes bottom up seldom top down the fact he has on his license plate d.c. statehood is a no as with the d.c. is on the occupation and people who vote to have a presence in the congress in the center of the united states of america that there's a huge social statement the fact he speaks of broadening the big tent all of us
6:07 pm
have a chance to not be the primary someone to research a live image and so huge statement i thought he was as a said going to have the american promise she had to be full feel when they he was already embarked upon this is the impact of growing life threatening violence in our society the gun violence. laws through than six thousand soldiers and their raw continue to do thousand americans killed a year from gunfire on the injured who do not die we have gone gone crazy three hundred million guns in the in america and now but these military assault weapons they are big on those all. regular gun laws because the power of the the state militia. shot in the white house. for the seventh about two years ago these military assault weapons are capable of getting in terrorism they can shoot on planes and so this is not just them out it seems to me if all.
6:08 pm
local police were also homeland security must you and i know that you've said that this is a matter of national security in the past don't you think you'd be more important to kind of address the issue of class warfare which bill which kind of breeds the violence before we talk about. gun legislation because i know congress is going to be talking about gun violence legislation this week it's a combination of class warfare indeed and there does exist more of them in chicago with five hundred six would feel on a cinephile on the age of eighteen as in that zone where the killing state places but for the five percent unemployment there's a gap between unemployed and the employed and that same got drugs coming in from across the border good drug cocktails and guns are coming in. so in drugs in jobs out and because it's basically black with brown within the
6:09 pm
city there's a kind of indifference to it when the killing took place to send the hook and those babies would feel it touched america differently and that's it that is better than a civil outing in that cloud because those babies were so innocent and the killing was so horrific these babies and their young to the rages never grow a chance to open their christmas presents it touched people have or it differently and how are we going to get rid of guns the reverend is the number one export of this country and i actually wanted to talk to you about you knew dr king personally and he once said that a nation that spends more on its military than on programs of social upper lip. is approaching spiritual death the amount of money that we allocate to the military alone in this country the fact that guns and weapons are our number one export in this country what do you think dr king would say about that today and that's what makes it so all some because there's so much money going to gun manufacturers. the n.r.a.
6:10 pm
is based on that bygone benefactor's moment of well not long ago that you really couldn't tackle common it was to smoke cigarettes monsters to i was as a conduit for killing a conduit for cancer we really brought down the back of the industry by charging the manufacturers would have been some responsibility for their product and that would be the ultimate task to do the same thing with these gun manufacturers but i'm rather convince also that to do that it means that we must see that we're not talking about we're going to gun laws you want to go into your house you got it . more like a killer relative than a robber commit suicide but you've got it gone for hunting utah amount of salt weapons that endangered everything that we stand for and because we're so gone the diktat the detox the spirits. to make us more committed to healing than killing is a huge cultural challenge and just kind of as a as
6:11 pm
a fall because we're running out of time i'm wondering are you more hopeful this year at this inauguration because i know you know four years ago two thousand it was very emotional for you but are you more hopeful this time around. more hopeful because present one begin against tremendous odds of hate hostility you're not an american they said you're not a christian this if you were not born here against such hostility you want when he came in the last four million jobs on him we gained about five million souls in that swing of five million jobs more americans have health coverage today a more youth kilogrammes education a subset of the day all motivated. number one again manufacturing automobiles again more people out of iraq so just on the rocks no one sees us moving in the right direction as work to be done relative to. cuba and venezuela on him if it were to be done on the on the astonishing poverty in haiti for example some big foreign policy challenges around their own hemisphere
6:12 pm
haiti venezuela cuba which i think really could be resolved if we really focus on them then there's the middle east tension which seems to be deadlocked again but having said that he didn't mention those errors in his inaugural address the problem there really in his mind you know i guess we'll have to see what happens and remain hopeful that that this time around we can actually see the change that we were promised four years ago he has a vision that at least he sees the big picture some people see america through a keyhole narrow they can see he sees it through a door and the door view one of them of the sixty two thousand and twelve by saying america is pro this is where gays and straights black and white ya know all find some common ground that if you have them or go on that is the motto of the kingdom of america and barack obama sees the king view and the curse of in the pin this
6:13 pm
view and that you won and that should take us forward by hope and unfortunately we are at a time but i do want to thank you for stopping by the studio that was human rights activist founder of rainbow push coalition you can find it at rainbow push dot org reverend jesse jackson thank you so much sir thank you monroe. you feel like you so far go to our youtube channel and use your dot com such break in the sense scribe check us out on hulu as well google dot com slash breaking the set check out our facebook page and like us at facebook dot com us senator what about what i'm doing when i'm not on air and follow me on the twitter verse abby martin stay tuned to hear about a harness for any kind of voices to pave their way into the system next. you
6:14 pm
know how sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else and you hear or see some other part of it and realize that everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture.
6:15 pm
it's getting harder and harder for third party voices to enter the system without getting mired down in things like campaign finance reform gerrymandering and lack
6:16 pm
of funds it's especially hard to get new blood in when our representatives can be seated for decades but americans are starting to see through this charade according to a new gallup poll seventy five percent of people say that if given the chance they would vote for term limits in congress limiting the number of times officials could be elected for more more than six in ten americans say that they would completely abolish the electoral college so the talked about the game being completely rigged campaign finance laws and the issues flying under congress's radar i'm joined by former congressional candidate liberty activists and journalists david seaman what's going on and thanks for coming on great to see you get it to see you again so david last year we talked about your congressional run we're all excited about it you're just with drew you made a public statement why a very eloquent explanation talk about it but i think the system as it exists right now is completely broken and hopefully it won't be like that forever hopefully it will fall to a point where independent voices and young people can get into the system but it's
6:17 pm
not there right now the campaign finance laws are designed to keep honest people independent people out of because i wasn't willing to go along with the party i wasn't willing to take special interest money i did not have enough money to continue and i would need campaign finance attorneys and the full time compliance staff just to stay in the game that's how rigged it is they bury you in paperwork and i was getting pitched by companies by election consulting companies there saying we could take over your messaging for you we can handle your demographic data mining we can keep you in compliance with the government with the four different agencies you have to deal with or three agencies plus the states that's four in total has a serious this is not what's in the constitution this is not what our founding fathers really intended they didn't intend for all these middle men to be there they intended it to be for somebody twenty five years of age or older to go to wall . to d.c. and represent their districts and do a public service really and now it's not that now it's a career opportunity for people to get in there and stay in there and we have
6:18 pm
a twelve to fourteen percent approval rating for congress as a whole and yet the same people stay in for decades why is that if i run a restaurant or you're in a restaurant and only twelve percent of the customers were leaving that restaurant satisfied with their meal that restaurant would be either out of business or shut down by the authorities so why is that that's a great question i mean you just heard me talk about the term of it's own people overwhelmingly support term limits and also they want to abolish the electoral college it seems like these are two things that really do this system really makes it hard for young people to get involved how how can we make this happen how do we bring this idea to fruition if we all want this yeah there's a lot of public apathy out there i think at this point if you have enough money you can get in regardless of what you actually believe which is a huge problem i mean this is one example fifty percent or fifty one percent of americans believe that marijuana reform but only something like two percent of elected officials believe in that so it's a huge disconnect not just one issue where there's a disconnect i think our whole system as it exists right now is kind of
6:19 pm
a meat grinder and what goes in is our hard earned money taxpayer dollars and what comes out predator drones and warrantless spying programs and t.s.a. checkpoints and then with some of the pennies the fall between the cracks and the on the couch with some of those pennies we get education. and your budget and actual good things for society. to see how much of our taxpayer dollars are going to just death and destruction and all the smartest minds in the country working on that faster drunk. yeah exactly we need those killer laser drones you know let's talk about the inauguration it was so absurd i mean it was just a total mess that you weren't experience but i mean it was also funded by giant corporations exxon mobil microsoft i mean interestingly enough yesterday also mark the third anniversary of citizens united of course in this court case ruling that says corporations. just donated it unlimited amount of funds to politicians what do you think about the inauguration and how much of this legislation really poll loot
6:20 pm
everything that is supposedly a democracy yeah you know you're it should look like a lot of fun but it's pretty ridiculous just an orgy of cash and these big corporations putting money into it it's almost like ancient rome having people sucking up to the emperor that's what it's like these companies want to stay on the good side of the administration so they dump some money into it and the media was like oh obama is keeping it so restrained this time around just a small private celebration just came in six hundred thousand seven hundred thousand people. you know close supporters that's not a small celebration i will never get six hundred thousand people out to an event and it's huge it costs a lot of money the security costs i don't necessarily have a problem with that but that money should not be coming from corporations who stand and i have a problem with that because i think it's absurd to have a second giant inaugural party for someone who's already been seated in office for four years plus he's a bad president did all these people just forget how bad his policies are then i mean that is hysterical waving american flags always dornan obama you're good at giving late night t.v. interviews you know he is
6:21 pm
a good speaker that's pretty much what he has going for him i mean let's talk about the issue that the corporate media is totally failed as they're covering this and you know the ball the dime in the glitz and glamour the n.b.a. you know past again what do you think about the fact that here it is just past despite all the resistance over the last year the lawsuit i mean the protests and what the what we do here. we're turning into idiocracy culture i mean you go to the airport and it's like. amusement park for rights violations you see a flashing sign that says have i.d. ready and there are signs now that have pictures of german shepards on them and say roving canine teams are in use courtesy of t.s.a. you know like your safety is our priority that's a little slogan your safety is our priority and take off your shoes if you're over the age of seventy five you don't have to take. it's this is the society that we have built for ourselves in our kind of dealing with the consequences of that and when you ask people about these issues you ask them about. which almost which could
6:22 pm
have passed the people how to raise awareness for internet censorship in america not in china in america you ask you about the stuff they just don't really know about it they're focused on honey boo boo they're focused on the n.f.l. players who fake their internet girlfriends fake internet girlfriends that's where all of our resources are going right now to figuring out you know was his girlfriend real that guy manti t.e.o. read every fish every hair is this like we just lost art or a powerful nation and we have a lot of great things going for us and we're innovative and we have so much money and so much land and natural resources but our priorities are a little eft up right now that's hard to dispute but david we need the n.b.a. to catch terrorists we need to present we need to align. people criticize means inauguration yeah why do you hate the troops so much that i just really can't figure out. why it's love the troops hate the drone and stuff so i told him yeah you know we haven't been a lot but i think including myself
6:23 pm
a lot of your supporters were really excited to see you run because we always like always right there david i was excited too it's impossible to win if you're not willing to sell by joining the article or having one of these crazy election consulting companies tell you what to say it's so sad but i mean for people who are looking out to you and saying you know what next what's next for you and what do you say to people who do want to get involved in this incident change we have very little time i say good luck it helps if you have a lot of personal wealth a lot of family wealth helps if you're willing to be backed by the koch brothers or by their equivalents on the left those things help if you're not willing to sell out don't even try just continue doing what you're doing now which is raising awareness big people where issues that you care about we have the internet at our disposal in theory we all could become aware of things like india and ask for change and it's all from the bottom up we really need to complete overhaul the system thank you for try. and thank you for pushing for the truth david seaman liberty activist journalist pleasure to have you on a little freedom pounds a little freedom pound man right thank you he's out.
6:24 pm
so did you get your inauguration still yesterday because i know i did in fact it was inescapable but amidst all the glitz glamour and had to ration for our dear president you may have missed this little headline rapper lupe a fiasco booted off inaugural party stage after criticizing obama yet notoriously outspoken rapper lupe a fiasco took to the stage at an inauguration party sunday proceeded to play one of his songs with lyrics that are perhaps a little too truthful for the crowd to handle and he sang this song for thirty minutes straight it's called words i never said it's opening lines a read i really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit just a poor excuse for use of all your bullets. later it says limbaugh is
6:25 pm
a racist glenn beck's a racist gaza strip was getting bombed obama didn't say. that's why i vote for him next one either i'm part of the problem my problem is i'm peaceful wow now the venue claims that them kick him off stage has nothing to do with his anti obama message but rather because he went on with the song for thirty minutes but come on i mean the fact he was a headlining act in an inaugural ball celebrating obama's second term i hardly think it's because he went on for a little too long so today i'm highlighting looping for being a total back in for being one of the most outspoken rappers out there but he's never shied away from speaking the truth in two thousand and eleven luke they called obama the biggest terrorist in reference to his drone program and described the president as quote someone who is a great speaker but kills little children so vocal opponent of war a champion for peace and freedom of speech looping fiasco you're my hero so that brings me right to the villain who's maybe too much of an easy target conservative
6:26 pm
author ann coulter most famously known for outlandish political commentary in the mainstream media if i were to talk about all her blunders and disparaging remarks they would take me literally all day and i don't want to give her that much time so i just go with the latest recently she returned from and lightning trip to europe where the problems facing gun violence in america suddenly became crystal clear check out what she had to say. on the gun crimes we keep hearing how little they are in europe and over there so no when they have no guns if you compare white populations we have the same rate as belgium so perhaps it's not a gun problem it is a demographic problem. well not a gun problem but a demographic problem instead hold up really what she's saying is that this is some issue of gun control mental health or the systemic causes of violence and inequality you know it's just blacks and hispanics apparently they're the plague keep in mind this is the same woman who said in the wake of the fukushima nuclear
6:27 pm
meltdown that radiation is good for you it actually prevents cancer i'm not joking here for yourself. the way you do in the body as an agent to ward off cancer. as many scientists believe as the new york times science section has reported it doesn't get press because you'll buy your account we should all be heading for the nuclear reactor you larry king in wells kind of thing out there in front of. millions. and coulter you're officially become a parody of yourself and p.s. when you get called out by an equally absurd pundit like bill o'reilly maybe it's a sign that you've gone too far so for me absolutely ridiculous to terrorize a mildly racist and coulter you're my villain of the day. all right guys and that for today's show thanks for watching always make sure to tune in for a very special episode of breaking the fat tomorrow on an exclusive interview with
